The Energy Fund, FP, abbreviated "FUNAE, FP", is a Mozambican public institution established under Decree No 24/97 of 22 July, as amended by Decree No 101/2020 of 12 November. The main objective of the FUNAE is to finance and implement renewable energy projects to increase access to energy in rural areas of Mozambique.

FUNAE plays a crucial role in reducing energy inequalities by integrating isolated communities into the national energy network. This mission contributes significantly to the energy inclusion and socio-economic development of rural areas in the country.

In addition to developing energy infrastructure, FUNAE is also dedicated to training local human resources, strengthening technical skills for the maintenance and operation of installed systems. The institution collaborates with local governments, non-governmental organisations and international partners to ensure that their projects are sustainable and have a lasting impact on the benefit communities.

Course History

The first years of activities of FUNAE (1997-2000) were marked mainly by the consolidation of the institution in internal organization actions, defining strategies, technologies, hiring and training of Human Resources. In 2000, it began to develop project activities.

During the 27 years, FUNAE has installed a total of 98 mini-networks. With the support of the private sector in the off-grid component, in the framework of the universal access targets, more than once had been established. 500,000 calls and, in its various spheres, electrified buildings of headquarters of administrative posts, schools, health centres, residences, commercial establishments and other infrastructure, including ice conservation systems. At the same time, they were built 115 Fuel Supply Stations, mini-hydric and more than 100 Water Pumping Systems.

Our action in the various projects implemented has an impact on the following areas:

access to energy through renewable sources;
access to water through photovoltaic systems;
access to liquid combustibles in communities;
Promotion of clean kitchen solutions.

Main Activities

The FUNAE has implemented a number of projects focused on the installation of photovoltaic solar systems in public infrastructure such as schools, health centres and administrative posts, ensuring that these areas have electricity continuously and reliably. In addition, it has promoted the development of micro-electric networks and the installation of small water plants to supply villages and villages.

One of the most prominent initiatives is the FUNAE Solar Panel Factory, inaugurated in 2013, which produces high quality solar panels. This unit not only contributes to the expansion of access to clean energy, but also promotes industrialisation in the renewable energy sector, boosting the country's economic and technological development. The plant, located in Maputo, is dedicated to the production and assembly of solar systems, with supply capacity for both domestic and export markets.

AREAS ACTUATION

Electrical energy: expansion of out-of-net power access through mini-networks and residential solar systems to provide energy for communities, including public and private infrastructure (e.g. homes, schools, health centres, markets, local government buildings, etc.);

Fuels: access to liquid fuels by building fuel supply stations in rural areas;

Energy Efficiency and Other Energy Services: Promote and implement productive energy use solutions in out-of-net communities including clean kitchen solutions (e.g. solar water pumping systems, irrigation systems, cooling systems for fish, stoves and improved kilns for community use, etc.);

Financing: Mobilising funding to boost the development of energy projects, including promoting initiatives with the private sector.
